Topic: 1937 rear car brakes

I'm getting to the point, on my rear axle rebuild, of addressing the brakes. First, I'm cleaning the brake cables. I did this a few years ago and now they are fairly gummy. I used wheel bearing grease on the cables. Is there a better grease to use? How often do the cables need to be cleaned and re greased? Second, I'd like to use new brake return springs. The old ones seem to be working, but I have no idea of how old they are. Point is I can not find any vendor who supplies mech brake parts. Any ideas on where to get these or is there any sub's that are good? Thanks, Mike

Synthetic grease and oils will not act the same way as regular chassis grease. It doesn't seem to absorb moisture. Try Southside Obsolete in Minn. or Third Gen Auto in Tenn. both with a web site, but with much more not on the web

Napa Auto Parts carries a synthetic grease called Syl-Glide. It's in a small tube and should work well on the cables.

Baxter Ford Parts in Kansas had all the springs and brake parts I needed for my 37.

Thanks for the tip on the hardware. I'll call them tomorrow.
Also, I want to reline the brake shoes. I removed the old lining and cleaned the shoes. The shoes all look the same, yet two have a 'P' and two have a 'S' stamped on them. The lining material I have are exactly the same size. Is there a primary and secondary shoe on mechanical brakes? Does the roller get installed on the primary shoes/ Or doesn't it make a difference? Thanks Mike
