I was contacted via e-mail from a Melanie D Prait, to purchase my 1947 Merc. convertible for $34,000. After some more e-mails I agreed to sell for $34,000.
They asked for my address, in order to send me a cashier's check. 3 days later I received a UPS. package with a check for $49,500 to cover the cost of shipping. He asked me to deposit the check. He said that I needed to send a $3,000 deposit to the shipping company the next day. I said, why would I not wait for the check to clear before I send a check to the shipping company, he said oops we have a very bad connection and hung up. These scammers are everywhere!

Bank to bank transfer unless cash in person. Check with your bank about setting up an account just for the wire transfer. Once the funds are received transfer them to your main account and close the account used for the wire transfer. Buyer to arrange shipping AND pay the shipper. Cashiers checks can be fake and it can take several days for verification. NEVER send the buyer money back for overpayment. JMO

Good advice by 51504bat. Cashier's checks can be good only if the buyer and seller are known to each other.

This is becoming a well-worn scam. Someone with that name tried the same thing on me a few months back. The tipoff is the request for the seller to arrange for shipment, an obvious departure from the norm. Bogus proposal, bogus checks, and a good way to give some hacker your bank account number. Not even a good movie script.
