I am a novice. Despite all warnings I am building a ’46 Flathead. I bought a “project” that had been started about 10 years again. The block had been tanked, Magna Fluxed, bored +30 and Camshaft bearings installed. The previous owner indicated that the valve seats had be replaces and ground. He also provide new valves as well pistons – all the internals. Questions: How can I tell if the valve seats are new. They look like to me…but I would like your thoughts. I started lapping the first valve today and I have attached pictures. If you don’t mind I can you take a look and let me know what you think before I start the next 15! Thanks!

better question--what is that coming out from around the valve guide? lapping valves --a clean line all the way around the valve indicates a good lapping job. yours looks good. be sure to mark the valve for position that you used to lap it. ie #1 intake, #1 exhaust

looks like spray foam Styrofoam ?? or a piece of packing foam??did some use that to hold guide in place while engine in storage thinking it would dry seal the area?? This message was edited by BIRUDY on 8-28-22 @ 6:28 AM
