the heating system was removed from my 49 convertible. Ha anyone tried or had any luck with a replacement system that can be purchased on line?

Actual 1949 heaters are available quite frequently on eBay. It would be easier to replace with what was there than try and retro-fit an aftermarket one. Or, if you don't need a heater, just cover the holes and enjoy. Heater cores have been known to leak.
