I’m putting a ‘36 back on the road after sitting 40 years in a garage. The speedometer doesn’t work. I replaced the cable and it still doesn’t work. Looks like the speedometer itself needs rehab. I found an impressive group (Bob’s Speedometer) in MI that gave me a ballpark figure of 500 to 900 dollars. It’s obvious they do good work. Maybe this is just how much it costs? Can anyone reccomend a gauge shop that does this sort of repair and might do it for less?

I’ve always had good results with Bob’s, but you might also get a quote from North Hollywood Speedometer.

You might try putting a little light oil on the speedometer drive shaft and try turning the shaft counter clockwise. I use a large cotter pin to turn it by hand to free up everything. Once it is freed up, you can chuck the cotter pin in a drill and run it for a while to see if works. Then run it clock wise to remove the miles that you added Some speedometers have a little removable cup on the top of the housing that covers a wick for oiling. If you can find it and soak the wick after you get it moving, your speedometer will last a long time. You do a Google search to find someone that does speedometer repair near you. I did a search and came up with this outfit in Milwaukee, WI http://www.speedometersolutions.com/ When you talk to them, ask for the price for a repair, not a restoration. Tom

You might give Rusty at Speedometer service in Colorado Springs a call. He sold me a NOS unit for my '54 Ranch Wagon very reasonably and checked it all out before shipping it to make sure it was in top notch condition since it had been on the shelf for a while. Don't know if he works on '36 units or not but worth contacting him, IMO. https://www.speedoservice.com/ 719-632-3165 Another option is Williamson's Instruments in Chester, AR. Ron converted a wind up clock to 12 volts quartz for me for considerably less than other quotes I received.
