Topic: 1936 Phaeton front end noise

I’m in the process of buying another early V8, this one a ‘36 Phaeton.

During the road test yesterday, all was well…until the first turn, when an abrasion-type noise came from the front end. This occurs during turns in either direction (but not when going straight).

It sounded like a suspension element might have been contacting / dragging against part of the brake, or that the brake assembly itself may have gone out of true under a cornering load.

Car track straight otherwise, no wander or vibration.

Would greatly appreciate thoughts before I proceed further.

  mechanial brakes or hydraulic ?
it could be the tire hitting the brake rod on sharp turns, if it has mech brakes,
the stops on turn could be missing or the wrong ones,
could use MORE information to dianosis the problem correctly

It is a metal on metal sound; could this still occur from the condition you describe ?

  Stock shocks or aftermarket tube shocks? Some aftermarket tube shock kits have the lower shock mount pivot off the shackle. On tight turns the rim can come in contact with the shock.

  Are the front wheel bearings properly adjusted? If they are excessively loose; a tire, brake drum or wheel could come into contact with other items under the car on turns.

  Get the car up on a lift and inspect the steering, brake and suspension parts for sign of abrasion. You should do this on any old car that you buy. The car you are looking at is 85 years old and probably maintained by an amateur mechanic. A thorough inspection should be done for safety sake.

  Is it the phaeton advertised in the V-8 classifieds on this site? If so it has non stock wheels and later brake drums for those wheels. The inner offset is much different than the stock wheels. May be rubbing against something on the suspension.

  This noise is often caused by worn springs. Many wear "pockets" where one spring leaf contacts the one above or below. As the spring flexes, the ends of the leaves are caught in these pockets and cause the problem. When we service old springs we grind down the pockets and spray lube the leaves as we reassemble them.

  Thank you - but would the spring pocket issue cause a rotational grinding / scratching noise or more of an intermittent / lateral one ?

  The noise happens when the spring is flexed by an uneven road surface or turning. It can sometimes result from one or more broken spring leaves. It is very difficult to detect broken leaf until the spring is disassembled. I have seen both. Shackle bushings are also a source of noise when badly worn. As long as the main leaf is intact, it wouldn't affect tracking. Springs collect lots of road grime.
