Which end of that spring goes toward the nut on the shaft that holds the steering wheel on? The small end, or the large end??

The horn ring and it's locking base just "POPPED off!! I put the locking base back on and tightened those 2 long, fine thread, screws SO TIGHT- that any more would strip the threads!! Then I put that spring on, large end down , and installed the horn ring-and when I connected the battery the horn blew right away ( before I got in the car!!) ? Spring must be installed upside down! (large end down). Took the horn ring off- And that darn base piece POPPED OFF AGAIN!! I put a very tiny bit of lube on their threads, and reinstalled it!! VERY TIGHT!! The theads feel good, and the M/C screws thread very nicely; and Again I tighted them REAL TIGHT!! I think that spring goes, SMALL END DOWN??? Is that assumption right ??( It's a very difficult thing to work on; so I don't want to have to do it again!!) Thanks for your help!!!

You are correct. The small end of the spring goes down.
