Topic: 1947 super deluxe chrome dash

  Hi,

I have a '47 super deluxe 2 door sedan and it has a chrome dash piece that goes the length of the dashboard and encompasses the speaker grill. The chrome on it is spectacular and in my opinion has great look. However I cannot figure was this piece an option in 1947 or if it is a dress up piece sold strictly through the aftermarket.

I believe this item was sold by aftermarket companys, not an accessory offered by Ford.

Was never a factory Ford part. My 48 business coupe has one also.
After owning 46-48 Fords since 1973 I've warmed up to the chrome
dash in the last few years.

As others have pointed out the chrome dash plastic is an aftermarket piece. Your car should have Beige dash plastic. I would suggest purchasing the 1941-1948 Ford Book offered by the V-8 Club.

I have the book and that's where my suspicion started. I like it so it will stay.

Thanks guys.

Years ago Drake made the metal pieces that were unchromed. Guys bought them and painted them the factory tan color to look like plastic. The good part is they would never warp like the plastic.

My '47 convertible had the chrome dash when I bought it 25 years ago. These were sold by vendors, such as Western Auto.
The plastic dashes from the 40's were either cracked or otherwise disfigured. mostly by exposure to sunlight through the windshield. Henry Ford was interested in using plastic in his cars, and was photographed wielding an ax to show how a trunk lid of plastic was durable. I kept the shiny dash in my car, which was to be a "driver", and it was often admired at the shows where my car was entered.

If you are happy with it leave it alone. Replacing it with the correct items is a pain, you need to be a contortionist to get up under the dash. The only reason to replace it is if you want to have your car judged and also to quiet all the "experts" from telling you that "you know the dash plastic is wrong".

The car is an exceptionally clean driver. It's got a lot of my labor of love in it. The chrome dash piece is a great addition in my book so it stays! Besides I am not a contortionist so changing it does not sound like something I want to do...

The answer to the "experts" that point out things wrong with your car, without you asking, is "I know that but I like it this way"
