Topic: 1940 Ford Parking Brake Ratchet Spring Replacement

RAK402    -- 11-22-2020 @ 2:12 PM
The spring for my Parking Brake handle broke, more years ago than I like to think about.

I have a new spring and want to replace it. The ratchet seems to be on a shaft with a round head on either end. I assume that it is peened over on one end-is this correct?

Is the correct procedure to grind or cut the head off to extract the shaft?

What does one replace the shaft with?

Thank you all in advance.

  Hi,
I replaced my spring months ago.. I ground the head off to remove the shaft. I simply replaced it with a no. 8 or 10 screw, or whatever was the largest screw that would fit. Of course, it would be better if you could find a long enough shoulder screw. If needed, cut it to the correct length and then run a die over it to attach a nut.
Regards,
Barney

  Thank you Barney!

I will go ahead and grind the top off of one end of the shaft.

I wonder if I can find a clevis pin the right diameter? That way I can use a cotter pin on the end.

Thank you again sir!

You might try ACE Hardware for the pin, they have a good selection of parts bins. FWIW

If you cannot find one at Ace Hardware, try McMaster Carr. https://www.mcmaster.com/

Well, I bit the proverbial bullet and changed that %*!#!!! spring today.

The last time I had that brake handle out, I was a lot thinner (and about 44 years younger). The actual work was not difficult, but age and a large increase in my diameter made it a bit uncomfortable.

I ended up removing the offending pin with a Dremel cutoff wheel and installing a clevis pin with a cotter key in it.

I appreciate the help and advice that this group provided me with.
