In my late father's Island of Misfit Toys is a flathead V8 that he always claimed was from a 51 Mercury. It is a homebrew marine engine conversion he did back in the late 60s. I am trying to figure out what I have. The date code is L9G which according to the internet is 3/9/1951 so that part lines up. The engine number is C0814 which does not seem to match anything I can figure out. The engine is built with Offy heads and a Fenton 2x2 intake. Do I have to pull the pan to tell if it really is the long-stroke Merc? Engine is free, has compression, and was running when removed from the boat (it was WAY too heavy) so it should be an interesting project for someone. Thanks for taking a look! Nathan

Thanks! Looks like I have to get the thing on a stand to know for sure.
