Topic: Odometer Can't Get Past The Nines

51woodie    -- 05-22-2020 @ 11:15 AM
The Odometer in my '46 was "stuck" with the last numbers at 999.9 miles, so I sent it out for repairs. It worked fine, but is now back at 999.9, and has stopped again. Shipping South and Customs fees are costly, so the question is; what can cause this to happen, and is this something a fairly handy fellow (me) can fix?

drive backwards and see if it doesn't roll back to ...999.8, then ...999.7. then drive forwards as fast as you can to get the numbers "over the hump." or you could just live with a "low mileage" car.

Thank you Ken. I'll have to try out my new inspection scope, so I don't have to contort my old body into a pretzel, and see what I have.

You don't have to crawl under the dash to see it. Just reach under dash with arm and go by feel with your hand. Very easy on my 36 to reset from the drivers seat. ken ct

I googled "1946 Ford speedometer" and found no images of a speedo of that era with a trip odometer. It is possible that a super deluxe did have one, I don't know.

  hi 46 ODOMETER
I assume this is a original FORD SPEDOMETER,
driving in reverse will not subtract the millage , it is magnetic drive it only works in one direction,
there is probably one of the gears inside that are not touching, or meshing correctly. loose screw ??
you can use a drill [ at low speed,] when the speedometer is out and watch what is happening,
might be a easy fix, these are very fragile so be care full when handling,
hope this helps, 37Ragtopman
maybe Bing or Google a few videos on repairs of speedometer ?

The 42 0wners manual makes no reference to a trip odometer. The 41-48 Ford book shows a trip odometer for 41 but shows no trip odometer for 42-48. I believe the trip odometer must have been dropped after 41.

It sound like you might have a problem with the 900 mile wheel. Did you check for speedometer repair in Ontario? I found this when I did a search.
