Topic: 6 volt battery for 36 ford.

kirkstad    -- 04-11-2020 @ 3:40 PM
I'm trying to locate a battery for my 36 ford. Most of the local auto parts places have 6 volt batteries, but they are about an inch to tall. I would rather not modify my battery box if possible. I haven't called C&G yet but they list a 6 volt optima, very expensive, but their catalog notes that they last twice as long as a regular battery.I would appreciate any help or suggestions.
Thank You
Frank

Frank, I am fairly certain you won't find an acid core battery that will fit the tray without modification.
Might I suggest an Optima? You can place that in the tray at an angle. I think they are around $75 or so. Check other suppliers...even Amazon. The Optima is available all over the place and has LOTS of CCA's and they last for years upon years. Just a thought...

  Another vote for the Optima.

BUT, Mike, you may not have bought one for a little while. They now run about $187.99 from various suppliers. Even at that price, they are still worth the reliability and CCA's.

HI 6 volt battery for 36 FORD
I was in TRACTOR SUPPLY CO and saw they have a 6 volt battery for a tractor that may work for you,
about $100.00,
take your old battery and compare, it might fit
no shipping and ready to go,
my 2 cents 1937Ragtopman

Thank you Steve Lee and Paul in CT.,but the 36 Batt. is located under the floor, that is why the height is so important. I hadn't thought of Tractor Supply Co,thank you 37Ragtopman. Thank you also MG but my 36 is just a driver and I would rather find a cheaper alternative if possible.

May I also cast a vote for the six volt Optima battery? We currently own and use four of them.

Attached is a photograph of the one in our '36 Ford.

It fits just fine under the floor. The battery box is an 8A out of a 1949/1950/1951 Ford, with a vertical steel plate added in the middle to accommodate the Optima.

Also visible in this shot are a FoMoCo C9 dual reservoir master cylinder (the car is a "Touring A" vehicle converted to hydraulic brakes), and a second floor pan cover plate with rubber gasket which has been rotated 180 degrees.

One of our Optimas is 14 years old and it's still working well.

  Frank=

Try contacting Larry Cossar . He was selling a '35-'36 floor cover that had a lift in the stamping for oversized batteries. I believe he is a member of one of the New England regional groups.

Glad to see that somebody else modified their battery box. On our 34's we used the 2L battery until Johnson Controls quit making them. The 34 battery is in the sme position aas the 36. Then we modified the hanging battery basket to use the Optima battery in an upright position. When the 6 volt Optima went from $112.97 to $189.97, I went back to Tractor supply and bought their6 volt tractor batteries. One I bought a Fordor 34 I moved the battery box to under the rear seat (The floor is elevated under the seat) and having the battery box lenghtened solved the clearance problem for thr upright Optima.

Thank you again for all the feed back and ideas guys.I decided to go for the optima 6 volt battery. Advance Auto had one for 187.99 with no shipping charge and a discount of 37.60 when ordering on line. I was also allowed to return my old batt. to a local store for an additional 22.00. Still expensive compared to a regular battery but hopefully it will last longer and it will be nice not having to pull up the mat and take off the cover to check acid level from time to time.
Thank You
Frank

Thank you Mr Kubarth . The optima fits perfect on an angle,I hadn't thought you could do that.
Frank.

Make sure that you secure the battery so it doesn't bounce around and short out.
