I’m sure a number of you have installed a Powergen Alternator on your early V-8
Can you recommend a good guide detailing what is required to make this change?
Thank you!

Be sure the pulley on the unit lines up with those on the engine, such as water pumps, crank pulley, etc. The correct belt has a different pitch, so check for fit in the new pulley. I am not familiar with the Powergen unit, but the more common later alternators have a built in regulator. The output can be connected to the system at the battery (BAT) terminal on the old regulator. You can leave or remove the other wires. The common alternators tend to not switch on when the engine is revved. We usually install a smaller pulley if this is a problem.

BF41 I installed a PowerGen 82016, 6V +ground on my '46 Coupe two years ago, and it has worked very well. There are a number of sellers, but Summit was where I got mine. In my install, I disconnected the leads to the generator, taped them off so they didn't ground or short out and left them laying on the manifold, so the I can easily switch back to the generator if I want to. I also left the regulator and wiring in place on the firewall so it looks stock. As per the instructions, I used a #8 wire from the alt output to the battery side of the starter solenoid, and also ran a #12 ground wire from the lower rear cover bolt to an intake manifold bolt. The only thing with the way I wired it is that the ammeter does not show if the alt is charging. The pulley that came with mine was the right belt size and lined up with crank pulley. They say you have to rev the engine to start charging, but that happens when you pull away in first gear. For me anyway.

You still have the 8BA engine in your car, right?
Mine was changed to an 8BA sometime in the past so should be the exact same deal.
Did you reuse the original belt or does it require a different profile?
Thanks for the help!

No. The car is a 46 Super Deluxe with a stock 59AB engine. Summit may be able to give you some advice if you give them a call.

If you can deal with a more modern look there is a company in Dallas that offers a 6v + ground single wire with bracket for $150. I went this route because of carb clearance. Half the price of a Powergen and no relocation bracket. Not the greatest picture.

Chief, that’s a great looking engine!
4 barrel carb?
What compression ratio are the heads?
3/4 cam?
Are you using a Pertronix ignition?
Thanks!

I went with a 6 volt ALT pos ground, KIT from CERTIFIED AUTO ELECTRIC in BEDFORD OHIO
about 6 years ago, [ reason, I was out on a cruise night and the generator went south and needed to have car on the road, and needed something in 3 days,]
took 20 minutes to install,
works SO GOOD never went back to a generator,
comes with all you need,
just tell what car and engine you have, they are very friendly , Jeff and Earl
and if you have a starter or alt or generator problem they are there ,
hope this helps 1937RAGTOPMAN

Woody, thanks for the compliment. I'm trying to duplicate a '49 that I had n the early 60's. Couldn't find a good WCFB so I had to settle for a Holley 390 cfm but the dished air cleaner hides most of it.. .030 over and stock cam, Offy estimated cr at 8.5:1. Mallory dual point flat top. Attached a picture of the starboard side.

  Chief,
I went the single 4 barrel route on a ‘51 Merc flatly back in the early 60’s!
If I recall it was a Rochester 4GC from a ‘55 Caddy that I got at a junk yard and rebuilt.
Fun days!
Do you remember the name of the company that you bought the alternator kit from?
Thanks, Bill

Load Boss Alternators, Dallas, TX. Current price is $249 with the bracket. Good product and a nice guy to deal with.

To have the charging current move the amp gauge, connect the alternator output to the wire that used to connect to the BATT terminal on the regular, not the solenoid.

51woodie    -- 01-22-2020 @ 7:07 PM
Supereal I was aware of that connection, but I didn’t know if the ammeter could take the current output from the alternator.

The best thing to do is change from an amp gauage to A volt meter its way more safe.Less chance of an electrical fire. OMO

51woodie    -- 01-24-2020 @ 12:55 PM
dandy. I agree on the voltmeter, but try to find one. Any place I looked are for 12V.

dandy32    -- 01-24-2020 @ 4:55 PM
how much does the 6 volt alternator put out amps wise they make A +- 60 amp gauage maybe call stewart warner and see if they have 6 volt volt meters sometimes they have things and dont advertise them.

dandy32    -- 01-24-2020 @ 4:57 PM
I'll look around if I find A place to get one I'll post where it is

51woodie    -- 01-25-2020 @ 7:46 AM
dandy. The test tag that came with the PowerMaster 82016 alternator shows: Volt Reg set @ 7.3 V
Amp output: Idle 55A, Cruise 60A, Top End 64A. I realize that this is the potential output, depending on the electrical load, or how low the battery is.

supereal    -- 01-25-2020 @ 1:43 PM
Your ammeter will work and handle the current output. A volt meter will work connected between the same wire for the alternator output Ford did use a voltmeter in 1940, but changed back soon after, as the ammeter is a more convenient indicator of the charging flow.' With your conversion, it will monitor the voltage level if you are concerned about it.

  Ragtopman,
Just got off the phone with Earl.
I ordered the 50 amp set up. $173 + s&h
As you said, he is very helpful.
Thanks for the lead!
