I'm reading the article on 1935-1936 Hot Air Heaters in the Nov/Dec issue of the V-8 Times. I'm curious, didn't the internals of the heater rot out from the exhaust gasses and bring pure carbon monoxide into the car? Am I missing something?

The heat exchanger is part of the exhaust system. They can rot out and yes put some carbon monoxide into the car.
