have to replace rear seal in my '50 ford car v-8. My question for you who have done this, can it be done without removing the engine as effectively as with taking out the motor?

before you replace the rear main seal, check the engine for internal pressure, check the oil filler cap for being clogged, when you remove the oil filler cap with engine running does anything come out of it ? smoke puffing ? and check any other vents for clogs., the pressure forces out the oil the rear main , first place it goes, you can replace the rope seal in the car, you will need a few special tools, to do this job, my 2 cents 37Ragtopman

If you are using synthetic oil, replace it with conventional oil. It is likely the leak will stop, or at least slow down. Synthetic is fine in engines with lip seals, but tends to go around the more primitive rope seals.
