Mounted trunk lid to check fit and installed support arms with springs, (after reworking the one side ) Trunk stayed up after first or second lift but after sitting down over night I think the almost 80 year old springs are just weak and now unable to hold up the weight of the trunk lid - have seen replacement springs, anyone have luck with changing the springs? - other alternative is to buy new whole new supports or fab a more modern setup with cylinder type supports - would like to stay original.

I would go for the repos of the originals. I would not use the gas type struts on a decklid or hood.

The replacement springs are difficult to install and may not fix your problem. The pivot in the arm is most likely worn after all of these years and new springs will not help unless the pivot is repaired in the exact same place as the original pivot. I am with TRJFord8, buy the Drake reproductions. https://www.bobdrake.com/f62931b5-08bd-4d79-84a1-c78b738c2929 I would also buy the hardware kit if you do not have all of the washers for the lower pivot.
