I am the proud “new “ owner of a 1936 Ford fordor humpback. I plan on changing the oil and want to use what’s proper for it. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

My preference is 20-50 Castrol or Valvoline OMO. ken ct 36 coupe stock 221 ci.

In these old Flatheads which have minimal oil sealing capabilities, I like to use a straight SAE 30 weight oil. Since the newer API Service SN and later oils no longer have the zinc and phosphorus additives to adequately protect the flat tappet and camshaft lobe surfaces which experience sliding friction, an additive should be used. My additive of choice is Red Line Engine Oil Break-In Additive. The oil I use is Pennzoil SAE 30 Detergent.

Like Ken, I have used Castrol 20W-50 for years in my cars. It helps to keep oil pressure up, and tends to leak less than others I tried.

You will get many opinions about this. Zinc and additives are not necessary. Any good quality multi-grade oil will do. I use 10w-30 in my 45 truck, which has some oil leaks, and Mobil 1 10w-30 in my 39 Ford Deluxe, which does not. My truck has a filter, my 39 does not (yet).

Valvoline Racing 20/50 has the zinc in it to prevent ruining that flat tappet camshaft! No zinc for a while, no cam lobes anymore! All of the "oils in the day" had ZINC in them. The EPA made them take it out!! Regards, Steve Lee
