Topic: 51 Custom Convertible

I have recently purchased a 1951 Ford Custom Convertible that does not have a convertible top frame. It does have the pump and rams for the top, it is just missing the frame.

I was looking for any guidance on where to start this search.

Place a want ad in the classified section of this site and also on the Ford barn.

You could also Google "parting out 1951 Ford" and use http://www.ownster.com/

Search for junk yards that part out antique Fords and contact each of them to see if they have the part.

The top frame is going to be difficult to find, as convertibles are the last to be parted out.

Try Hydro-E-Lectric 800/343-4161. When I restored my '47 convertible they found many parts for me. If they don't have them, is is likely they do know who does. I agree with my friend TomO about difficulty locating a salvage yard that might have them. Good yards are linked by computer, and usually can send out a call. The parts for my car came from both coasts, and several states out here in the midwest. That is why it took years to get my it done. Convertibles were limited production models, and Ford farmed out much of the production. My final investment was $27,000 in parts and body work, not counting the original purchase price. We operate a large repair and machine shop, so that helped to keep the overall costs somewhat. It is a trophy winner now offered for $29,900 which is below NADA book.

Also let us know where you live as some of us may know where there are older salvage yards where you might find the top.
