I have rebuilt my 59A and have about an hour of run time on my test stand. This thing runs great. I drained the oil and it seems a little murky. I am looking at pictures and diagrams and it seems the oil and coolant are completely separate. There are no oil passages to the head or intake so an incorrect head gasket or intake gasket should not allow coolant in to the crankcase. Is there that much condensation buildup from short runs? The longest it has run at one time was 15 minutes. All responses are appreciated.

James, How was the engine block internals cleaned? Is there a possibility that some liquid cleaning agent was left in one or more of the oil passages? I doesn't take much water or other non petroleum fluid to discolour 5 quarts of engine oil. I would suggest that you put fresh oil in the engine and run it again. If you are really concerned, you could take/send a sample to a oil testing lab for analysis. Any Cat dealer or industrial truck shop can help you with a contact.

It was cleaned twice at the engine machine shop. I assumed it was dipped. I am pulling the pan just to be cautious. The small amount of something you mentioned to discolor the oil was why I had condensation in my head.

When you pull the pan look closely at the pan rails and the block sides inside and above the pan rails. This is where freeze cracks occur.

HI water in oil I had this happen to me when I used aluminum heads , then went to cast iron, after this, did they replace the core hole plugs, [ freeze out plugs,] these are in the block along the bottom edge, the oil pan covers these up for the most part, but I would think if rusted real bad could seep water into the oil pan., also water pumps have a weep hole for oil to enter and lube them, maybe the are worn ? and leaking coolant in reverse ?, also before you get this dealt with use only water, no antifreeze,! is there any pressure building up in the coolant system ? engine runs smooth and no steam coming out of tail pipes,? I would pressure the coolant system with oil pan removed and check for internal signs for water 4 lbs should show something, hope this helps 37Ragtopman
