I have a 1936 Ford and I am working on which it over from mechanical brakes to hydraulic brakes my friend has a rear end I was told it has 5X5 1/2 bolt pattern SO how can I find out what the Gear Ratio in a 1940 Ford rear end Any one out there know ??

On the center of the housing under the torque tube flange there is a vertical rib with numbers stamped into it. Divide the small number into the large for the ratio IF it hasn't been changed over the years.

3:78 was one of the stock differentials. So was 4:11 and 4:44. Mike "Kube" Kubarth

Ya know, unless you plan on flying on down the highway, the authentic Ford brakes will do you just fine. One must always remember, these cars, regardless of how well the braking efficiency is increased, continue to steer, etc. just like an old Ford. Kind of like the guys around here that think just because they have four wheel drive (modern trucks) they can stop faster than two wheel. Mike "Kube" Kubarth

Yes that may be true but some of us guys are getting older and we been there and done that on the Lincoln brakes they say they are easy to adjust were the Ford brakes you have to adjusted more often . only looking for a easy way out some of us is it hard for us to get up and down the old body needs a tune up

Yes Sir you are right and that is what I been told You don't Have to keep adjusting them with the Lincoln and i spoke to Mike at Boling Brothers in Lindsey Ca this Guy knows his stuff

Keep in mind the the 1940 rear end may be wider than the 36 one.

As I have watched this new into old within the 1932 -1948 era I have seen the major change is not in track but in spring width. There is even a dimension spring base that refers to how far from spring mount to spring mount front/rear that varies. Softer ride was the goal not cornering power. Ford and this club has surely shown me that commonality was something Whitworth defined in English machine shops and fasteners and interchangeable parts was something Eli Whitney meant within a design and not across designs or years. Back to Ford where not even the wheels were the same from 1932-1948. Talk to an artist sometime as he tries to convince you that the way he gets proportions is by first making circles for the 4 wheels. So if a Model-T has 30x3.5 tires what is the outside diameter of a 6.00:16? Bear with me my critics have defined a monster.
