How do the rear wheel bearings on a 1939 Ford get lubricated? Must they be packed with grease or does it come from the differential?

They are packed and should not receive any rear differential oil. There is a seal inside each axle housing preventing the diff oil from leaking into the wheel bearings. A lot of guys like to use NAPA Stay-Lube 3131. I suggest not using the Zerk fitting at the tire end of the axle housing for lubrication, since it would be too easy to over lube and damage old seals.

The grease fitting on some rear axles are an artifact that disappeared years go, and should be disregarded. The StaLube heavy duty drum brake grease is excellent. It contains fibers which aid in pulling the grease into and around the roller bearings to assure adequate lubrication. Using any other type of grease will accelerate the damage to the bearing surface on the underside of the axle housing.
