I am writing a 4-part article about rebuilding early Ford/Merc 3 speed transmissions. These are “Tips & Tricks” that I have developed over many years of re-building these early Ford 3 speeds. Just recently a customer brought me 3 side loader (40 – 48) transmissions for me to go thru. They were built almost 50 years ago & have NOS parts in them. My customer wants now to use them & is concerned about them being stored away for so long. I was told they were built by a famious flathead Ford racer & builder of flathead engines, transmissions, rear-ends & an early “Bullet Proofing” Columbia rear-end builder. Also, I was told this gentleman was an early member of The Ford V-8 Club, possibly a founding member. This Ford man’s name is Jack Miles. Lived in southern California. Upon opening one of these transmissions up I discovered 2 tricks Jack did that I have not heard of before. My customer (Carl Morton) is a retired custom car builder who owned & operated Valley Custom in Burbank, CA. Carl told me the man who built & did a few modifications to these transmissions name was Jack Miles. I want to give credit to Jack Miles for the mods he did. So, I am looking for any information about Jack Miles. If you have any or your pals please contact me. Mike Ready 8908 NE 349th street La Center, WA 98629 360-263-30112 mready39@yahoo.com
