Topic: Gas Tank Installation : Spring position?

  Hello,
Car is a 48 Super Delux Sedan.

I have a new gas tank to install but need help with how to locate the spring on the front mount.

The rear mounts seem simple enough with the tank flanges mounting to a Z type bracket which mounts to the car frame.

The front has a single mount with a caged nut on the tank. Looks like the tank flange sits on the car frame direct. So where does the approximate 1 inch spring go? Between the tank flange and the frame? The tank pivots some on this spring? And does the bolt go up through the frame through the spring into the caged nut then a castle nut on top of this?

It's not intuitive to me at all.

Thank for any assistance.

Lance

  Hi ya Lance,
The spring goes over the bolt (shank) and is threaded in to the caged nut. The tank flange sits directly atop the frame. Well, almost that is. A small piece of "anti-squeak" material was placed between the flanges and frame. This is a woven material saturated with some type of oil.
It's (the material) readily available in rolls, etc. If you need some, let me know and I can send you enough to do this job.

Be sure to do a "dry run" before final installation to be sure that the tank will fit with the mountings in the right place. We have seen some replacement tanks that don't have the indentations to accommodate shock mounts or other chassis features. These are necessary to provide clearance for the bolts, and to prevent noise from contact with the chassis. It may require some "adjustment" with a hammer.
