  Optima 5 volt battery discontinued!
My neighbor needed a new battery today for his 1936 Ford and was told the my favorite 6 Volt Optima battery has been discontinued. I searched and found none available, but no announcement from Optima.
Anybody have any connections to verify or suggest a better battery for our 6 volt car? I found a tractor 6 volt battery at Tractor Supply, they also have an 8 volt one.

That's bad news. I confirmed this on the Optima Official website. Bummer.

I have had great luck with Interstate battery. I am on my 2 nd one in 10 years. They have lasted about 5 yrs. which is about normal with batteries.

42guy - Can you provide us with the Interstate model designation and part number? Any detailed information you can get off of the battery you have will be helpful....

Is yours a Group 2HF or a Group 2LF?

I think Johnson Controls quit making the 2L for Interstate and Die Hard & NAPA about 30 years ago. They also quit the smaller 19 L for 6 volt VWs too.

Interstate batteries are available at NAPA. A group 1 6 volt battery fits in the battery tray of both my Model A and my 42 V-8. They last about five years with the sort of usage that an antique car gets.

You might google Crown battery of Fremont Ohio. They make 2 sizes of 6 volt batteries. Used them for years.
The web sight has lots of info. mike

The Interstate battery is a 2-XHD and is 6 years old. Still going strong.

Forgot to mention it is rated at 610 CCA and 750 CA.

Alan, all I could find out at the Optima site was that they were out of stock on the 6 volt red top battery. I sent them an E-Mail asking if they are discontinuing it.

The E-Mail address is

info@optimabatteries.com

and it would probably help if everyone sent them an E-Mail asking about the battery. If they get enough queries they may continue the battery.

After 4 years and three free replacements I have finally given up on Optima batteries

For any number of reasons (or no reason at all) I was regularly charging, or taking to be charged.....a dead battery.

More than one source told me they sold the company to some outfit in Mexico and have gone down hill rapidly.

Last week I purchased a Duracell lead acid 6 volt from my neighborhood Batteries Plus for $89.00 Warranted for only one year, but as we all know you can pay big bucks for a battery that will let you down suddenly and without warning well before it should. Then you buy a cheapo that will still be going strong long five years later. It's just the nature of the beast, and I have big hopes for my new tiger.

I've been using Optima batteries for 11 years and the one problem I had was my own falt for not initially charging it correctly. At this time I have 5 Optima batteries. Two 12v versions in my modern cars and and 3 6v red tops for my 35 Fords. All working well.

A few places have Optima's left on the shelf or the back room. But you won't get an effective warranty with them. Sellers/retailers are not responsible for warranties, only manufacturers. Some sellers might make good on one they sold you but you'll get a different replacement.

I'm using a deep-well Interstate (sold for RV's and boats).

Email from Optima Customer Service just now:

Hello Alan,

Thank you for contacting Optima Customer Service. It is currently on backorder, but I am unaware of it being discontinued.

Thank you,

I received the same message from Optima, just out of stock.
My 39 coupe has had the same Optima for 9 years with no problems. I run two 12 volts in my 580 Case back hoe, and a 6v in my model A also. No problems with any of them, they make a good product.

That is the answer that I received also. It has me wondering where they are being made if the company says they are on "backorder".

Deleted this message because I determined some parts were not factual.

I have a 9 year old optima 6V and it just started to slow down the starting speed. I enquired at NAPA here in Michigan if they sold Interstate. They said they do not. They did find an Optima 6 volt in inventory in Detroit and I picked it up the next day. I'll post updates if it is less reliable than the super reliability I got on the last one.
