Just purchased a 40 Ford 2-door standard. The seller told me it had a 42 Mercury engine in it. How can I verify that information. What codes on the engine would identify it? Thanks.

Pretty car. Here is a link to an article on engine identification. http://www.45cui.com/45cui/tech/ford-flathead-engine-identification-part-1 The V-8 Club now has a book on the flathead engines that is more detailed in the differences. Your distributor may not be the crab style, the original 1940 helmet style could have been used just by replacing the timing gear cover and using an adapter for the short camshaft. The 1940 engine is just as good as the 42 Mercury, just a little more HP in the Mercury engine. Tom

Thanks. This chart confirmed the engine to be a 1942 Merc as stated by the guy who sold me the car.

In the now 5 years (rookie level at best) I've been an EFV8 member and Forum visitor, this is the first time I recall seeing the excellent chart/engine ID reference material Tom posted. Not only a perfect dispute resolution tool/great to have in your pocket when buying/judging - also something we all would do well by ourselves by printing to a .pdf and saving to our hard-drive & library archives as well.
