Topic: How to identify year of rear end

I have a 36 Cabriolet that was converted to hydraulic break before I bought the car and need to find out how to identify what year car the rear end came out of.

Is there an easy way to do that?

Thanks

Rick

Hydraulic brakes could have been installed on the original '36 rear, a '37/'38 rear, or they could have installed by using a completely stock '39/'40 rear that came from the factory with hydraulic brakes already installed. If you post some pictures of the rear from several different positions, I could tell you exactly which year rear you have in your 36. If you wanted to know the rear gear ratio, that could be determined as well by a couple different methods.

What do you mean by "rear end". The axle housings are unique to 35-36 with the radius rods attached to angle brackets on the housings. Later radius rods were bolted to the housing ends along with the backing plates. If you have the later type, the axles/housings were one inch longer on each side starting in 1942.

The ring and pinion are interchangeable from 35-48. The hydraulics came in two varieties for Ford. The 39-42 had eccentrics on the bolts at the bottom while the 46-48 had the eccentrics on fixed pins.

A complete 37 to 40 (41 pu) rear will go under a 35-36, and bolt right up. I'm dismantling at '40 rear right now that had been in a '35 3w coupe for years.
