the 2 thermostat housings i have are way smaller than the top radiator hoses. the parts house tells me this is correct but i question that ..the housing is maybe 1-13/8" o.d. and the hose is 1-7/8" i.d. is this correct and i just tighten hose to fit are could i have the wrong housing thanks for your help

There are no thermostat housings required for the 1941 Ford V-8 Engine. The thermostats simply rest on top of the cylinder heads inside of the top radiator hoses.

It sounds like you might have an 8BA engine in the '41. Are the water outlets at the front of the heads? If so, just cut a small section of 1 1/2" hose and put it on the engine outlet, then slip your 1 3/4" hose over it and tighten.

The 8BA style engine came in '48-'53 Ford trucks and '49-'53 Ford and Mercury cars.

so much for being original, but now i know what year to order engine parts from. really appreciate your help. as you can see my knowledge of a early v-8 is limited however i have enjoyed getting to know the car. i traded a friend for it in boxes so it's been a journey ray

The engine might be more closely identified by the numbers/letters in the center of the heads, such as 8BA, EBA, 8RT, 8CM, etc. This isn't fool proof as parts get changed over the years. As you continue on your journey with your car, you will find the folks on this forum willingly share their knowledge of our old Fords.
