That's normally an indication of wear on internal surfaces of housing and/or gears, which may require rebuilding the transmission to correct the problem. John

On my truck it was nothing more than a worn pin in the shifter , which was very loose horizontally . Does yours have excessive movement when you move it side to side ? If so , call Charlie Schwidler @ 716-440-8952 . He is a great guy & is very reasonable . - F F
