Topic: Clock Lighting on a 1950 Car

I don't know how the Ford outside venders, that made the 1950 clocks, expected buyers to read them in the dark. The light bulb is in the upper left corner, and the the black face is eliptical with the largest part in that corner, so any light has to get to the face through the other areas, and that is little to none, and you can't read it with the lights on when it's dark out. I'm very surprised that Henry accepted them. Has anyone found a remedy for this?? I'm thinking of cutting a little metal off in that area to fix it. Any other ideas for a fix???

My 49' and the 50' clocks are the same and lite up nice! Are you using 12 volt bulbs with a 6 volt system?

  No! 6volt bulbs with a 6volt system.

Those clocks had a green plastic strip around the face between the bulb and the dial. You could try removing that strip and/or replacing the bulb with an LED from www.superbrightleds.com .

Thanks for the info about superbright!

Took the clock out, removed the green plastic strip; still clock didn't have good light. Hmmm??

Used a little ingenuity and finally found that the blonde metal piece in the casing has a lip fit tight to the back of the clock face blocking 90% of the light!.

I took my Dremel and ground a little groove in that blond painted piece, in the bulb hole area, so light could get in. Re-assembled the cock, tested it and, Bingo!! Clock lights up nicely.

"Think outside the box!"
