If the pickup tube has actually disappeared, it is likely lying in the bottom of the tank. When that happens it is usually due to rust. You can remove the sender and inspect the inside of the tank to see if the tube is there. The only fix is to replace the tank because if the tube rusted away, it is likely the "tern" coating ("a kind of solder") has become breached and allowed moisture to attack the steel. Cutting into the tank can be dangerous unless it has been steam cleaned because any gas vapor remaining is explosive.
