Ref: post by"nickguninn" 03/09/17 and "len47merc" 03/10/17. Those of us who have a 46/47 Ford in our collection ( I still have my 46 Sedan that I drove to high school in 1958, second owner) or have read about or seen these combinations that are a product of Henry's production procedures or previous owners can relate to this. A friend of mine called the other day to inform me that he had located a 46 Ford Sedan that he had been looking for. Found on the internet in California, he called the seller for info, sent a local car guy to look at and verify the condition, purchased the car and had it shipped to his Shop here in Kansas. This same car showed up in my driveway the other day for my approval and expert analysis.! I started by saying "Wow.!! that's a nice '46" and he said, "no it's a '47.! "Well it sure looks like a '46" The PO, says that it is a '47 and the title says that it is a '47" " Lets check the Vin.*799A1552577* "Yep, it's a 47" I'm looking at a '46 "Deluxe" Grille, 46 bumper and guards with the license bar, '47 headlight rings,'47 hood ornament that lights up with the lights.! (ever seen one of these, not sure if this was offered as an accessory or home made.?) All of the side trim is correct '46 and in the proper location, it does not have trim the around the windows, 47 running board trim, '46 trunk trim, '46 rear bumper with guards, '42 tail lights, 42 instruments and Speedo, '47 steering wheel and column, push out vent windows,( no date code.) I think that this just about covers most of the obvious items that I observed om my short tour, I'm sure there's more. I've seen and heard a lot about these in my time, but I think that this one is probably the best example of what you might find in this on going search of what's out there. I'd like to see how the judges would handle this one, if it was entered in National competition. I should clarify that neither I nor the new owner is concerned as how "correct" this vehicle is, I just wanted to share our "example" with other Ford owners and enthusiasts. Thank You.! Steve

In addition to some of the items you mentioned, check out Appendix D Evolutionary Changes for 1941-1948 Ford Passenger Vehicles in the '41-'48 Ford Book to learn what other anomalies you may find that are actually correct for both '46's and '47's thru early April '47. Hood trim, odometer (or no?), which jack stand and tools, etc.. Interesting. I'd stop well short of endorsing the '42 components, or any '42 components, being 'used up' on a '46 even the later '47, but many combos can and do exist for the cars finished between August of '46 and April of '47. Steve, seems like you got a nice car. I went thru similar guessing about my 47 Tudor until I bought the 1941-1948 Ford book published by Early Ford V8 Club of America. Not much difference on Late 47 and 48 but mine has just about every feature of a 48. Per above book frame numbers for 47 start at 1,412,708, so yours is a very early 47. Does it have any of the original glass in it? That will also help understand the date of mfg -- Bob

Is there some proof that parts were not replaced on the car? Back when these cars were just used cars, parts from the 42-48 cars were interchanged when they fit whatever year you were working on. The 46-48 Fords were popular among the high school crowd in the 1950's and 1960's, and everyone wanted his car to be special. I am by no means good at identifying the differences between the 46-48 cars, but the one thing about the 46-47 Fords that I remember is the trunk trim. The 47's had the nameplate on the trunk and the 46's had the bars by the trunk handle. This made a big impression on a 13 year old car nut. Tom

Is this a "Rouge" car with original paint and upholstery or a restored car? The reason for the question is if it was restored, the restorer may not have spent the research time to put on the correct parts. I would seriously question the '42 gauges. I once owned an early 47 convertible that had the '46 trim and parking lights. It also had the '46 convertible/woody gauges. It definitely looked like a '46 but had the '47 series frame number.
