Topic: 51 F1 air breather

Mine seems to lose oil. There appear to be two pin holes in the reservoir base thru which oil disappears into the housing of the breather. Is this normal? I thought the oil pool was just what you can see when you take off the top, up to the "fill" line". But the label says, "fill with one quart of engine oil". The pool area that you can see would not hold nearly that much.

My carb gets wet with oil. Where is this coming from?

Many thanks

Peter

Despite what the decal says, fill to the line. If oil is leaking, it is likely the reservoir has rusted through, which is not unusual. We convert to a paper filter element just to get rid of the mess..

Peter, get out your magnifying glass and read the decal again. If you have the correct decal, it will tell you to clean and fill with 1 pint of oil.

Solder up the pin holes if they are in the bottom part of the air cleaner. You will have to use a strong degreaser to clean the metal and use an acid core solder or plumber's solder and flux.

My breather leaked oil wetting the carb. The lower section that holds the oil is made up of two sections pressed together. Clean the bottom section and blow out with compressed air.Fill the area where two parts join with an RTV caulk, alow to set and cure as the label instructs, then fill with oil and place on workbench overnight to check for leakage .
