Topic: 1938 horn rod and headlights

  Hello,
Just picked up a nice 38 half ton and had a few questions maybe you Ford wizards could help with.

I found that the last owner dismantled the headlight switch and cut the horn rod in half. Where can I get a new one? I cant find one to save my life!

Second, I want to keep the truck as stock as possible but be a daily driver. What can I do to make it reliable and not have to go 45mph everywhere?

Thank you Ford wizards

The horn rod is not reproduced and you will only find used ones at swap meets or you can run a free want ad on this site. The pickup used the same horn rod as the passenger car. As a temporary measure you can put a small button switch under the dash for the horn and also use an aftermarket headlamp switch. Just for info I suspect someone tried to pull out the horn rod and found that it would not come out unless they dropped the steering gear. It was easier for them to cut it off than drop the gear. Sure glad this guy didn't go into being a brain surgeon!
Regarding the 45 mph speed you may have to change rearend gears. Look on the bottom rib of the rear center section. You'll probably have to scr*pe off years of grease, and you will find two stamped numbers. Divide the small into the big number and this will tell you the ratio of the rear end (hopefully no one changed the the innards). If you come up with a number like 4.11 or 4.44 you have the low gears . What you need is the 3.78 that came in most passenger cars.
