Topic: 1937 flatbed stake on it's way to restoration

  Just wanted to introduce my grandfather's 1/2 ton stake truck that he bought in 1957. Seller bought it for $85 several months before. This truck has been in our family ever since. My brother and I learned to drive in it in the 60's. My brother lost interest in it years ago, after disassembling it to begin restoration. He did get a new frame, which was the reason he took the truck apart. My grandfather replaced the original motor with a 59A. This was a good running truck before being taken apart, so I'm hopeful the drive train issues will be minimal. Other than the engine (and paint) the truck is original, stakes and all.

I've been a longtime member of the efv8 club, even though the truck was in pieces in 2 garages, and joined
the Dearborn RG last year. I found a referral to a shop familiar with early fords through the local RG and the truck was picked up to begin restoration last week. I had hoped to have it on the road for the 75th anniversary of the 37 models in 2012 but that ain't gonna happen.

I've got more to share and am sure I'll have a few questions for the gurus here as well. I already have the 37 Ford book from the club as well as the green book, chassis parts list, service bulletins, etc.

Hopefully, here will be a couple pictures of the 37's last move while in pieces.

  37V8, welcome to the forum. It looks like a great project and what a great thing to do by restoring a family heirloom. Hopefully we will be able to answer all your questions and give you some guidance on the restoration.

  I'm not sure how solid the wood in the bed is, the wood supports under the cab were shot. I'd prefer to keep the bed and stakes original as they are, but that may not be an option.

I did get some good news, sounds like the truck will be done by next June 2012, instead of the year and a half to 2 years that they expected. Just in time for the 75th anniversary of the '37.

  Hopefully, this will be a picture of Nolan Cason's 1937 Stake. This is what my truck should look like.

He had the '37 stake and panel trucks, both done in gull gray with black fenders. His '37 panel was on the back cover of the V8 Times volume 35, #4 from July/Aug 1998, if anyone has that issue.

  I was going to do my 35 P.U. as a Stake Body but not correct for 35. I will have a pair of rear fenders for a Stake body at Hershey since I will not be using them.

My name is Joe Cason, Nolan was my Father. Was going through looking for other stuuf and found this post and was wondering how your restoration is coming?

His Flatbed is now mine, and is in NC with me as thats where the USAF says i must call home for now. I try to drive the truck somewhere everyday, because thats what he did. Driving the truck, going to shows, working on it, and passing on it's history/leagcy to my son brings back wonderful memories of the times I spent centered around the truck with my Dad.

I'm NO WHERE near as knowledgeable as he was, but if theres anything I can do to help you, just drop me a line...And please send a pic or two of your truck when finished.

  Joe, Welcome and thank you for picking up where your Father left off. Nolan was a good man and a great V8er. We all miss him and his truck, and we're glad the truck will continue in good hands.


While in North Carolina, you might stop by and say h*llo to Dennis Carpenter in Charlotte. Dennis knew your father and would be glad to see you.

  Joe, thanks for your offer, PM sent.

It's great that you were able to continue the caretaking of your Dad's pickup. That's just the way my grandfather used his truck, it was his daily driver, farm truck.

Your photos in the other thread are very good, much better than the old ones I'd found on the 'net. Even looks like a different color, a lighter gray than what I had seen. Very nice.

The right front fender was a NOS we got from Hershey in the early 80's, it was the template for reshaping the damaged original left front fender.

  One of our Dearborn RG members rebuilt the correct 37 engine, in trade for the engine that was in the truck, and also went through the transmission.

  they were able to reuse almost all of the original wood in the truck, except for the wood spacers under the cab. The original bed and stakes also will be saved and reused. There is a cabinet shop next door to the restoration shop, kinda handy... Evidently, the tongue and groove assembly of the wooden risers added great strength and stability vs dimensional lumber.

  If I don't review the photos periodically, all I can look at here are the bills...
They've got to correct the gaps on the cab doors, clean up some dings, repair the lower driver's door hinge and then the major body work should be done, and it can go on to paint.

  It is looking great. I wish my dads was in that great of shape when we started. We are just about finished with ours.
