My door handles have a lot of slop in them, rattles. I have removed the latch mechanism in each and notice that the receiver in the latch, through which the handle shaft goes, is worn, allowing the handle to flop. I cannot find any replacement parts. Is there a way to "weld", "braze" anything into this hole and file it square again? Any better ideas? Many thanks Peter

If the square part of the latch is worn, it is better to build up the shank of the handle and file or grind it for a better fit. Usually, if the square hole is badly worn, the rest of the latch is, too. Then, the only real "fix" is to replace or repair the latch. Sometimes replacing the internal springs will help. Most latches are held together with tabs. Be very careful when bending them, as they tend to break easily. If you can't locate replacements, often the internal parts can be rebuilt by welding on material and filing it to size. More often than not, that is what we do.

On my '51, it was the springs that were worn or broken. They are available, but I found 2 NOS assemblies. If it's just the handle shaft, I'd do what Supereal advises, or look for some NOS assemblies, and eliminate all of the wear at once. Richard
