Topic: Oil filters

I have a 51 PU. Should I change the filter every oil change or can I leave the filter out all together and change the oil more frequently?

We always change the filter when the oil is changed, as it contains about a quart of dirty oil. If you have the original Fram-type oil filter, NAPA has the filter cartridge, #1006. The old bypass type filter certainly doesn't do the job of the modern spin-on kind, but it does catch enough to be valuable.

I do have the original canister type and I'll go to NAPA. I'm sure they are less expensive than Carpenter.
Thanks!

We buy them by the case, but they retail for about ten bucks at our NAPA. The filters are also available at some farm stores, as they fit Ford tractors, too. I like the NBAPA version, as they include both the narrow and wide cap gaskets.

Nichols; I use the NAPA Gold 1006 in my '51 PU V8 and is about $12 for a single. Like Super said it comes with both gaskets and also has the ring on top to pull out. You'll pay about $19 at Carpenters with shipping for their's.
No question about it, I have always used a filter. You never know when something might come loose and go floating around, even(especially) a new rebuild.

Wix just about makes all of the major brands of filters including GM brand, NAPA, Texaco, etc. You can go to a Wix dealer, usually a heavy tractor, earth moving, and get one around here for $6.00 ea. I just buy a case of them and my friends get them from me.

I had Advance Auto Parts cross reference the NAPA #1600 and I got a Purolator L30034 (replaces P34) for $6.96 each.
Thanks for all your comments!

The cross match for the NAPA filter cartridge should be for the 1006, not 1600.

Sorry, that was a typo on my part. The cross match was for the 1006.
