Topic: 1947 Pickup Inside Rear View Mirror

rawlir    -- 09-12-2024 @ 3:40 PM
I am trying to install a Period Correct Inside Rear View Mirror which i understand was an option in 1947. I have accumulated a few at swap meets over the years. The black one & the blue one has screw holes that do not line up with the trim holes at the top of the middle of windshield glass. Also the Vermillion small cover piece does not line up with screw holes to cover that joint. Might some know more about this application?
Thanks!!

I believe that if your pickup was to have a inside rearview mirror, there would be dimples in the metal header above the windshield mouldings.
This would be similar to the dimples in the metal header if there were to be sun visors in vehicles.

You may have passenger vehicle interior mirrors and that is why the mirror brackets do not line up.

Hopefully a late 40's pickup owner will reply and clarify.

The cab on a '47 is basically the same as the '40-41 pickup. I suspect that the mirror would be the same as the one used on those pickups.

The bottom mirror in my photo does look like it will work, there is 1 screw hole that lines up & fits on the center windshield divider, it places the mirror a little lower that displays backwards thru the rear window better...still can't figure how/why that joint cover screw holes do not line up, i would not think Henry would have had more than one size of those?? Certainly does not look right to just have 2 holes exposed like that....

Did ALL 40 & 41's come with a rear view mirror? If not, was there a joint cover with them? I have a 46 pickup that has a black mirror like the top one in my photo & it fits....BUT the center divider in it & my 47 do not have 3 screw holes in the very same position....weird!!
Thank you guys!!

I think the red piece of trim is for the bottom of the garnish molding that rests on the dash.

I can only speak to 1940 and 1941. Both years, the inside mirror was an option. In 1940, the mirror was identical to the passenger car, oval in shape. In 1941 it was rectangular, identical to 1941 passenger cars.
the inside mirror was quite useless in reality.
If no optional mirror was installed, the trim at the bottom was utilized at the top as well.

I believe that 42/47 inside mirrors were options as well. Since i wrote this discussion i discovered that the mirror in my 1st photo that was not sandblasted fits. I have seen one like it in several Tonner photos. I blasted it, painted it, installed it & all looks good, works good. Still can't figure the trim piece, my trim piece screw holes are 1/2" or so wider than the holes in the inside windshield surrounds???
