Topic: 1946 Truck oil pan

I am trying to find and resolve oil leaks on my flathead v8, behind the oil drain plug there is a large cotter pin that sticks out of the oil pan, the loop part of the pin is inside the oil pan, the bending shanks are outside and bent up, this pin is painted the same red color as my oil pan, so I think it has been on for quite some time. Can anyone help me to determine what this cotter pin is for and if I need to try and seal up on the outside of the cotter pin to stop any possible oil leaks? Thanks in advance for any help on this.

That cotter pin is there to keep the drain hole in the bottom of the clutch housing area of the oil pan free of debris so that the oil that leaks out of the rear main can drain from the housing.

Thank you so much for the reply, I will leave as is, and look for other areas for my leaks. I am currently cleaning up the oil pan to try and find leaks, and of course changing the oil.

Check the area around the dipstick where it enters the pan. That can be a source for leaks.

FYI. if a Flathead does not leak it is out of oil. there several things that will help==good seal on the drain plug, front seal is not too good so leaks occur here and blow to back/sides of oil pan. using heavier oil and no synthetics will help-I use a 20w50 oil
