Topic: 37Rackbody - third question

As long as I'm trying to find out as much as I can about the truck I thought I would ask about the brakes.
So I've realized the brakes are mechanical. That was a shock for me. I had never heard of them.
Today's question: Are they reliable brakes?
I've been told they can be converted to hydraulic.
Is that a step too far? Thoughts please.
Thanks for any and all help

These guys for info on converting to hydraulic brakes.

As far as hydraulic vs. mechanical you'll get different opinions. Some say mechanicals are just as good as hydraulics when all parts are in good working order and they are adjusted correctly. A lot depends on how much you plan on driving it.

Ah, the feel of steel, from pedal to wheel.
Henry Ford said that not me.
But good adjusted cable brakes on an 1937 or 1938 Ford Motor Company product worked well and stopped the vehicle.
Does it take some time to adjust the brakes so that they work correctly --yes it does, Ford sold a lot of cars with mechanical brakes, so something must have been engineered correctly.
Converting to hydraulic brakes can be done, but it will be a lot of work and you already have a vehicle that has all the components of the original brakes.
Your choice, but cable brakes worked in 1937 and 1938, so they should be able to work now once you go over them.

I re assembled a 1934 Chevy Master Sedan for a friend 20 years ago with pull rods for the brakes. He doesn't drive it much but he takes it to the Newport Hill Climb every year and the brakes are still doing fine.
