Good morning, I recently came about a ‘47 Marmon Herring 4 wheel drive with a 226 ci. Six cylinder engine. Am wondering if the distributor is similar to the v-8 as to does it only go in one way. Trying to get it started after many years of sitting. Thank you.

I think that the distributor needs to be aligned with the drive gear by cranking the engine until the #1 cylinder is at the top of it's travel on the compression stroke.

Rotate the distributor gear until the rotor aligns with the #1 spark plug wire on the distributor cap and install. Make sure that the distributor rotor still aligns with
#1 cylinder when it is tightened down. It's very easy to install one tooth off which will make timing difficult.

Otherwise, you no doubt know to change all the fluids, especially the gas which is probably bad by now and can foul the carburetor.

Does the vehicle have the early Ford six cylinder (1941-47) "G" series engine or the later "H" series engine which was introduced late during the 1947 model year? The G series engine has a front-mounted distributor while the H series has the new type of distributor with a vacuum diaphragm advance mounted on the left side of the engine. The early front- mounted distributor only goes in one way while the later distributor will have to be timed correctly when installed.
