Hey Guys ! I have a question about '48 - '53 rear sump truck oil pans . I have noticed that some have a baffle , & no removable cleanout plate . Also , some have a large removable cleanout plate & no baffle . Anybody know the reasons for this ? Thanks - F F

The large clean-out plates are for exactly that. Trucks are/were high mileage vehicles, required to be in service continuously, the cleanup facilitating this requirement.
The baffles on some and not others, had to do with the configuration of the pan itself, some needing different clearances than others to accommodate steering and suspension, for which some had deep narrow sumps that needed no baffles. Those with baffles needed them to prevent oil from sloshing to the opposite end of the pump's pickup during turns or heavy braking, causing the pump to lose prime.
