  48 merc std 3 speed flathead ,all original, need to get thing more highway friendly , change rear end ? just change gears in rear end? ,please help

  Probably just change the gears in the rear end but I must admit I don't know anything about the truck rear ends. Do you know what gear ratio you have in it now? That would be a good place to start. You should add your general location and email to your profile, you can never tell when it will pay off.

  I'm assuming you have a '48 Mercury pickup(Canadian). In the glove box door there should be a metal tag which would show the rear end ratio. Most likely it's a 3.93 or 4.11. Changing the rear gears would be the best way to go. A good highway ratio for your pickup would be 3.56 or near that number. You can change the gears in the existing rear end or an alternative is to put in a later model rear end from another Ford pickup. You can use up to a 1972 Ford pickup rear end and it will be the correct width , will mount right to your existing springs and will have the same wheel bolt pattern..

  It's been a while , but I think that you may need to change the rear universal.
