How hard should it be to hand crank an 8BA flathead with the plugs removed? I have the pan off, and am replacing the starter. Previous starter stripped internal gears during a faulty start (bad battery). I have been turning the crank with a wrench on the front of crank belt pulley. It takes about 50 ft. lbs. to turn it. Is this normal? I don't want to install the new starter if there is something binding the crank. No evidence of that except that it just seems unusually hard to turn the crank by hand. Many thanks. It sounds to me like it is turning too hard. I started my 8BA last summer after about 25 years of sitting. Before hand, I soaked each cylinder for about a week with MMO. I made a hand crank and turned it (easily) about 100 turns per day for about a week to limber it up for starting. It cranked very easily.

Remember that you are dragging 8 dry pistons so there should be a steady r Drag. It takes a beaker bar to turn over a dirt engine.

Just for you I cranked over my brand new, never run flaty with the plugs out. Using a newly calibrated Snap On 1/2 inch drive torque wrench, it turns over just fine between 44 and 47 lbs foot. That feels just fine/normal. It could easily go to 50.
