Topic: 1940 Barn Find Restoration

I'm restoring a 1940 Ford Pickup that I recently found sitting in a barn for 35 years. It's mostly original with No Rust or Damage. I would like to have the Flat Head V8 that is in it rebuilt, but I'm having a hard time finding a "Reputable" Machine Shop within 100 miles of me here on the Central Coast of California that knows Flatheads. It also has Vintage Aluminum Edelbrock heads on it. Everyone has been telling me that I can put 3 small blocks in it for the price of a Flathead. So, I don't want to pay an exorbitant amount of money, but at the same time, not an inexpensive amount either. There is a budget to everything. I've torn the block down and from what I can determine, is that it is an early 40's Merc Engine Block. I don't want to Rod out the truck....I just want a good reliable running Flathead V8. Also, any ideas on new modifications to the bango axel without going custom would be greatly appreciated.

It appears that your truck may be a '41 based on looking at the hood. If you are a V-8 club member you should buy the V-8 Club's 40-41 pickup book for $10. It will give you a lot of information on the differences between the two trucks. You can order the book on-line from this site or by calling 707-226-5256. If you are looking for someone to do your motor you might call Red Hamilton in Ft. Bragg, California. I have no idea on prices, but he has been building flatheads for a long time. He can be reached at 707-964-7005. Also if you at not a member of the Early Ford V-8 Club you should join. The club's V-8 Times magazine is well worth the price of subscription.

Depending upon where on the central coast you are located, this engine rebuilder may be within your 100 mile radius. These folks rebuilt a Flathead V8-60 engine for me a few years ago.
Midway Engine Rebuilders, 481 E. Market St., Salinas, CA 93905. You can call Steve at 831-424-6370.
