  I am replacing the brake cylinders on my 1942 doolie 2 ton fire truck,when removing the rear brake drum, do I have to remove the cover on the center spindle? and what is inside? Anyone familiar with large truck rear brakes?

  The way that I read the Shop Manual is that to remove the hub on the full floating axle truck, you remove the axle shaft and then remove the hub. I have never done it so I cannot give you better directions. Here is a link to the Shop Manual that describes the procedure.

  A regular dual axle has the axle removed then there are two large nuts with a locking washer between them, a hammer and chisel will straighten the tabs and can be used to loosen the nuts and tighten them to get the drum off. They do make sockets for those nuts maybe you can borrow one. There also could be tongue spec.

It was just like you said, I was able to replace the brake cylinders, grease, adjust the brake shoes and put everything back together again. Thanks for your help.

  I went through an old truck book and could nothing on packing the bearings. I do not remember doing in the early 70s when i worked for Ford. We need a heavy truck mechanic. I will keep looking.
