Topic: 1937 Stake Bed Pick Up VIN

I am trying to confirm the Ford trucks year by the VIN. The VIN is stamped on the frame. I think it is a 1937 but cannot find anything in writing that confirms that. Is there anyone who has reference material that will help? VIN is *BB3608399*

The serial number is 1937 and you can confirm it here: http://www.vanpeltsales.com/FH_web/flathead_serialnumbers.htm among other places such as the restoration guidelines the club publishes: https://www.earlyfordv8.org/Shop.cfm?id=59&pid=2 The BB prefix (instead of 18) was Fords way of indication it went into a large commercial vehicle and came from the factory with a 4 speed attached to the engine.

Charlie - you cannot imagine how appreciative I am for your prompt response. I had found the Van Pelt site prior to asking the question but I still do not understand how to read it for the BB VIN in 1937. Can you guide me through it? I only see the 74 or 78 or HB prefixes on this chart. Is there a separate chart for trucks rather than passenger cars?

I believe every word you say and am glad to know that the BB was a prefix used in addition to the 18 because the 18 was all I could come across in my research and I was beginning to worry.

Any guidance you can supply would be greatly appreciated!

The "BB" prefix for the heavy commercial vehicles started in 1932 and carried on for I don't know how many years. I assume you have an 85 Hp V8 and not the smaller 60 hp. The 85 HP has 21 head studs and the V8 60 has 17. The serial numbers were independent of the prefix so use the 18 series of numbers (assuming you have the 85 HP engine). The BB indicated that there was a 4 speed transmission and maybe a few other unique things about the engine/transmission assembly as it was shipped to the assembly line.
