47 pickup. I took starter off. I took all the bolts along each side out. I took the bolts and nuts off along the rear where it attaches to another thin metal piece. Now it looks like I need to remove bolts from transmission to rear thin metal piece. Is this correct?

It sounds like you have a 48-53 8BA type engine. There are several styles of this cover, but as I remember, you need to remove it to remove the pan. It should be fairly easy to take it off.
