Restoring 1948 F1. Looking at photos of many of these, the surround color on the grille is either body color or, in many cases, a silver or yellow. What is correct?

The brochure shows the surround color to be a tan or maybe a pale yellow color. I would check with the Club's truck adviser as the brochure may not be accurate, or only accurate with certain color paint schemes. Tom

- All the ones I have seen are painted the Argent Silver.

Tom's answer got me thinking and I remembered that the 49 and 50 had the argent bars and surround, while the 48 had the stainless bars. I don't trust my memory as much as I used to, so I did a search in the V-8 Times index on this subject. I found 3 references, so I went to look at the articles. The best answer was in the March April 1986 edition, by James Wagner, heavy truck adviser. His answer is that the early trucks had the bright bars and a Tucson Tan (M14227) painted surround. Trucks built after August 1948 had argent painted bars and recess. The bars had a red pin stripe on the top and bottom edges. The 49 and 50 trucks continued the argent surround and bars, without the pinstripe. That issue also had an interesting article on the 1946 Ford production. I read the whole magazine again, making for a nice evening. Tom

Tom, thanks for the research. Very interesting regarding the tan insert and the change to Argent. If anyone ever did a book a book on the Ford pickups from 40-53 they would encounter a monumental task regarding all the running changes that occurred with the commercials.

Tom, to add to the confusion, very few trucks are restored to factory specs. Most of them are done to reflect the owners preference. Now that restoring a car has become very expensive, the trucks are beginning to get attention. Tom

Johnmyron, if you have the stainless grill bar covers, you should probably paint the surround Tucson Tan, unless you can prove that the argent was used with the covers. I would contact the Club's truck adviser about the red pin stripe width and position on the bars, if you are going with the painted bars. The advice is free to Club members. Tom

Had already decided to go with the yellowish color as per what was original on this truck. Did not have a color reference however. I am an original freak. Thanks so much to all of you for following this up. Will order the Tucson Tan. John Wells

Tom-one more point-imaged attached shows grille as I started restoration. I would appear that not only the surrounds, but the grille bars as well were painted the tan color. Although I don't recall seeing any mounting holes for the stainless grille bars, I intend to install them. Thanks again for all you help on this
