Topic: Vibration torque tube

Recently purchased 47 Mercury that has bad vibration at speeds above 50mph. Wheels, tires, alignment, all ok. It is coming from the torque tube and I suspect the universal joint, jacked up with wheels turning, the closer you get to ujoint the more it vibrates. Low miles on new ujoint put in years ago. Is there such a thing as a faulty new ujoint bought from Macs years ago. Also, was ujoint for Ford the same as Mercury. Ujoint # B7090U listed for Ford but not Mercury. Hate to tear this all apart if I am missing the obvious. Thank you

The Mercury uses the same U-Joint (P/N B-7090) as the Ford from 1939 - 1948.

It is unusual for the U-Joint to fail, but you could have a defective one. Make sure that the 11/64" B 7095 washer is present and that someone did not use a thinner washer.

Another source of vibration could be the center bearing.

Center bearing in torque must require special tools to replace. Is washer you refer to the thrust washer. Must be someone in club that had vibration problem related to torque tube. Thank you

The washer is not the thrust washer, it is the one between the bolt that holds the U-Joint to the trans.

The center bearing requires a tool the will help position the bearing.

Your description of the symptoms indidcates a problem with a lose U-Joint or a bad center bearing.
