Recently bought a rough 51 Merc Convertible...needs frame off to restore properly. Does any one know if there is such a manual and where could I purchase same ? Thanks for your suggestions Tracker

Unless the body is bent or too rough to leave on the frame, it is far better to leave it there, and brace the body fore and aft, as well as crosswise. I tried it the other way, and it creates huge problems in getting everything to fit. I found the 1944-1952 Ford Body Parts catalog to be extremely useful when I restored my '47 convertible, but I don't see any Merc info in it. Due to limited production, many Ford open car bodies were made by another firm, which may account for the lack of info. Convertibles present unique challenges to restoration of any make. They are great fun when done, but it took me most of a dozen years to get parts located and assembled.

Thanks Tom...I bought a video recently and I call it the "Nancy Pelosi special "...you have to buy it to see what's in it and the info was sketchy and poorly presented...not much use. Tracker

Thanks SR This one is rougher than I first thought...I don't think I will take the body off as you say...I found out the hard way on an earlier version the metal will warp easily if not properly chained & secured. May not even do the project & part it out instead. Tracker

Tracker, The link that I gave you is for the chassis and body parts catalog for the 49-51 Mercury. They have scanned the catalogs and put them on a CD. The body parts catalogs do not have very many drawings and the drawings are not complete. If your project is incomplete or very rusty, you might be better off offering it for sale on the HAMB and let someone make a nice hot rod or custom out of it. Tom
